Condolences

Condolence From: Peter Pihl
Condolence: Ashley’s mom and my mom worked together and are very good friends to this day. But I really only knew Ashley from afar. When we were kids back in the 70s, we’d have what we now call “play dates” because our moms wanted to hang out together. We had fun when we were kids, but I wouldn’t exactly call us “friends.” Then my family moved around and our friendship never grew as we grew up. Eventually we moved back to Arlington and Ashley and I ended up attending the same high school. She was year ahead of me, and she ran with a different circle of friends, so paths never crossed. I knew who she was, but given the span of time, I didn’t think she remembered me from when we were little kids. So our friendship never materialized. When I went to my 20-year high school reunion in 2008, I learned about facebook and quickly signed up. Shortly after that, I received a facebook message asking if my mom worked at American Airlines. I didn’t recognize the last name Arrington, so I had no idea who I was communicating with. Turns out it was Ashley. She had remembered me from when we were little kids. And it turns out that she knew who I was in high school. We both regretted not getting to be friends in high school as well as better friends later in life. Though we didn’t communicate often, she and I kept in touch on occasion via facebook over the next 8 years. It was interesting how we could share a random thought or comment even though we were separated by time and circumstances. In a roundabout way, and without knowing it, I feel we realized a friendship that was long overdue. At least I did. I hope she did too. In this day, it’s rare a person will reach out to someone to strike up a conversation and build – or rebuild – a friendship. But Ashley did that. Still, I regret not getting to be even better friends with her. That one sweet act of reaching out makes me wish I had. I am saddened by her passing. And my prayers are with her family. I have always thought highly of them all, so I am very sorry for their loss.
