Gary Wayne Robinson was born on November 19, 1941 in Fort Worth, Texas. He passed away on June 15, 2017 in McKinney, Texas. Gary was the third of seven children. His parents, Herman and Birdenia Robinson, preceded Gary in death.
Gary grew up in Springtown and Jacksboro, Texas and attended Jacksboro High School. While in high school, Gary played football, basketball, baseball and track. He graduated from North Texas State College (now University of North Texas) with a Bachelor of Arts in Education.
Upon graduation, Gary spent his life in education as a history teacher and athletic coach – his two passions. He taught in Frisco, Kennedale, Smiley, Brewer High School, Fort Worth, Crowley, Cleburne, and Grandview. While many opportunities existed, Gary felt his calling was at the middle school level, fostering young athletes.
Gary married Phyllis Elliott on July 4, 1979. Gary and Phyllis Robinson not only joined together in marriage, but also as one time owners of Friou Floral in Cleburne, Texas. During this time, Gary continued to coach and teach at Cleburne Junior High. After 34 years in education, Gary retired in 2003 in Cleburne, Texas.
While in Cleburne, Gary was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Texas Coaches Association, and member of the First United Methodist Church. He loved being with friends and serving with these two organizations.
Gary is survived by his wife, Phyllis Robinson; and his children, Steven E. Metze and Sharla Davenport. He also leaves behind his loving grandchildren, Alwynne Metze, and Reagan, Addie and Libby Davenport. Finally, he is survived by his six siblings: Glen Robinson, Linda Smith, Terry Robinson, Dennis Robinson, Darrell Robinson, and Debra Kay Moore; along with all Gary’s numerous nieces, nephews and loyal friends.
The family wishes to thank all of those who have cared for Gary, as well as those who assisted Phyllis during Gary’s fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
In lieu of flowers and to enhance Gary’s love for education, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Cleburne Education Foundation, P.O. Box 1731, Cleburne, Texas, 76033.
