Obituary for Ann Kimm Valdez

Keene, Texas– Ann Marie Kimm Valdez, 63, died after a bout with cancer, June 20, 2018, at home in Keene, Texas. She was born May 14, 1955, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was the daughter of Lyle and Mary Alice Kimm of Norway, Iowa.
Ann graduated from Norway High School, Class of 1973. Following graduation, she attended Northwest Missouri State University and completed a BS in Education in 1977. She taught physical education and English. She later completed a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Reading in 2008 at Southwestern Adventist University. Later she completed her Librarian Certification from Texas Women’s University. She taught, she was a one room school Principal, she was an athletic director, district Librarian, and an adjunct instructor at Southwestern Adventist University. After a few years teaching she married José Valdez one of her ex-student's uncle. Ann, her husband Joe, and son Caleb lived in many different places and have made countless dear friends during their time spent in San Antonio - Texas, Somerset - Missouri, Canyon Lake – Texas, Jefferson – Texas, and finally settled in Keene - Texas. Ann and Joe celebrated 35 years of marriage on November of 2017. In Ann’s early college years she was a pioneer in women’s athletics. She competed across the board when there were no college divisions and no college scholarships for women’s sports. She was inducted into the Northwest Missouri Hall of Fame for basketball, track, and cross country. She was predeceased by her parents Lyle and Mary Alice Kimm (Norway, Iowa). Surviving her husband are her husband Joe Valdez and son Caleb Valdez (Keene, Texas), Caleb's fiancée, Sasil Smithee, of Cleburne; Sister Nancy Less (husband Tom of Watkins, Iowa), sister Carma Herndon (husband-Len of New Braunfels), brother Bruce Kimm (wife-Debbie of Amana, Iowa). 17 nieces and nephews. Ann will be cremated and her ashes will rest at Keene Memorial Cemetery. A memorial and reception service will be provided by La Fuente Church in Cleburne, Texas.
