Obituary for Roy Silas Mercer Jr.
Services for Roy Silas Mercer, Jr., 80, of Glen Rose will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 24, 2018 in the Open Door Church in Burleson. The Reverend Ercel Lewis and Reverend Otis Gillaspie will officiate. Burial will follow in Bethesda Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Zachary Mercer, Clayton Mercer, Cade Mercer, Kedron Mercer, Brad Schwalk, and Keith Stone. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Quinlin, Doug Swendsen and Steve Brown. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, December 23, at the funeral home.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the Senior Citizen Center in Glen Rose.
Roy Silas Mercer, Jr. passed away Thursday, December 20, 2018 in Glen Rose. He was born December 29, 1937 in Fort Worth to Roy Silas Mercer Sr. and Faye (Parks) Mercer.
Mr. Mercer was employed with Mercer & Son Feed Store in Burleson, Texas Steel, Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant, and lastly a professional truck driver for Central Freight Lines. He was also a rancher. He loved his family, farming, hunting, collecting guns and knives, his orchards where his specialty was growing blackberries, watermelons, peaches, apricots and persimmons, forty-two dominos game, Texas Rangers, and driving his cart around his farm, along with his side-kick, his dog, Ranger. Roy and Mary served side by side pastoring the “Spirit Wind” Church in Glen Rose for 32 years, retiring in October 2018. Spirit Wind served the community all those years helping those in need and spreading the gospel.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Mercer of Glen Rose, sons, Monte Mercer and wife Kathleen of Burleson, Roy W. Mercer and wife Sandra of Burleson and Stephen Mercer and wife Amanda of Stephenville; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Gene DeWitt, DDS of Burleson, and sister, Patricia “Patty” Mercer Hood of Burleson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Melanie DeWitt.
