Samuel Jones, a Vietnam Veteran and longtime resident of Kerrville, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 surrounded by family. For six years he courageously battled cancer without ever complaining or losing his smile. He was born on June 19, 1944 in Pilot Point, Texas to Everett and Clova (Maxwell) Jones. He attended Cleburne High School and Abilene Christian University before enlisting in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot.
The U.S. Army recognized Sam for his honorable service with The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight. He refused to leave any fellow soldier behind. He did not speak about his time in Vietnam but proudly participated in Veteran events and his unit reunions.
After being honorably discharged as a Captain in the Army, he started his 38 year flying career for Petroleum Helicopters International (PHI) in 1972. While flying for PHI, he met and married the love of his life, Ruby Dyson.
They married on November 15, 1972 and celebrated 49 years of love on November 15, 2021. Together they raised a daughter, Nancy and spoiled or “well loved” two grandchildren, Samuel and Ashley. His family was his pride and joy in life. He also loved being in the sky and flew helicopters and airplanes for fun for a total of 51 years.
Sam was a kind and generous person who was loved by anyone who was blessed to know him. In his spare time he enjoyed HAM radio, hiking, traveling, and being outdoors. He took his last flight on Sunday, November 14, 2021. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jan; grandparents; aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Jones; daughter, Nancy (Jeremy Pomplun) Jones; grandson, Samuel Griffin; granddaughter, Ashley Griffin; father of grandchildren, William Griffin; sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory may be made to Disabled Veterans at dav.org or American Cancer Society at https://donate3.cancer.org
